Founded 70 years ago by K M Mammen Mappillai, Madras Rubber Factory Limited or “MRF” is India’s largest tyre manufacturer. The name MRF is almost synonymous with tyres in India. Such is the impact of this brand on the Indian minds. However, very few people know that it started with a very small amount of Rs 14K. MRF Tyres has humble beginnings and the journey started with the manufacturing of toy balloons at Madras (now Chennai). The company’s first major step towards becoming a giant in the tyre business came in 1952, when it started manufacturing tread rubber. Since then there’s no turning back for MRF Tyres as the company ventured into several new avenues and grew by leaps and bounds. Currently it has a revenue of over 2 billion dollars.
The company has a strong pan-Indian presence with sales network across the country. They currently have 8 manufacturing units and 4 warehouses. The company’s exporting history date backs to 1960s when it started to export tyres to USA and Lebanon. They even established their first office overseas in Beirut (Lebanon’s Capital) in 1961. Today, they foothold in 65 countries with 180 offices globally.

Awards & Recognition:
Company’s aim is to give best quality products to its customers worldwide. They have a very stern testing system for their products. Before it is available for public MRF tyres undergo several tests on various roads. Some of the awards won by MRF include:
- JD Power Award 12 times.
- TNS and CAPXIL awards for being voted the most trusted tyre brand in India.
- All India Rubber Industries Association’s (AIRIA) award for ‘Highest Export Awards (Auto Tyre Sector).
- MRF also ranked 48th in India’s most trusted brands list.
- FORD World Excellence Awards – MRF is the only Indian company to win this one.
Association With Sports:
MRF has a long association with motorsports as well as Cricket. It is the only Indian company to develop formula car tyres. MRF’s rallying team has won the prestigious FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship twice. Added to this, MRF pace foundation was launched in 1987, to train fast bowlers. Later, the foundation was expanded to Sri Lanka, England, West Indies, Australia, New Zealand, Bangladesh and England. Some of the world’s best known “fast bowlers” such as Shoaib Akhtar and Brett Lee have taken the advantage of this foundation. Last but not the least who can forget the fact that MRF logo decorated Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar’s bat for over a decade in 1990s and early 2000s.
