The Japanese automaker introduced the Fortuner to give the taste of Land Cruiser to the SUV enthusiasts across the globe. The second generation version was launched to replace the ageing model and to muffle the popularity of new Ford Endeavour, its arch-rival. The refined engine comes paired with the choices of 5-speed manual transmission or 6-speed automatic transmission gearbox. The petrol variant only offers 2WD option. On the diesel front, the engine makes 177 PS of maximum power at 3400 rpm while the peak torque varies on the type of gearbox with 420 Nm at 1400-2600 rpm (manual transmission) and 450 Nm at 1600-2400 rpm (automatic transmission). The diesel engine can be availed in either 6-speed manual transmission or 6-speed automatic transmission gearbox with choices of 2WD and 4WD systems. The Toyota Fortuner can be manoeuvred accordingly through Sequential Shift and Paddle Shifters under different driving modes.

Both petrol and diesel engines have been tuned to provide maximum fuel efficiency. The petrol 2WD manual transmission delivers 10 kmpl, while the automatic variant returns a mileage of 10.26 kmpl. Similarly, the diesel automatic 4WD delivers a mileage of 15.04 kmpl. Moreover, the manual version can return 14.24 kmpl from a litre of fuel.
